The Government of Uttar Pradesh has approved a major expansion in medical education seats for the 2025-26 academic session, adding a total of 950 MBBS and 271 postgraduate (PG) seats across government and private medical colleges.

The recent increase in both MBBS and PG medical seats in Uttar Pradesh is a strategic move by the state government to address the critical doctor shortage and enhance medical training facilities.

UP Medical Seat Increase (2025-26) Breakdown

The seat expansion is divided between undergraduate and postgraduate courses, with specific allocations to both government and private institutions:

MBBS (UG) Seats

A total of 950 new MBBS seats have been approved.
Government Colleges: 200 seats are being added across three government-run medical colleges, including 100 seats at the Autonomous State Medical College in Amethi and 50 seats each at the ESIC Medical Colleges in Noida and Varanasi.
Private Colleges: A substantial 750 seats are allocated across 12 private medical institutions.
New Total: The overall number of MBBS seats in Uttar Pradesh is now approximately 12,800, comprising 5,450 in government colleges and 7,350 in private colleges.

PG (MD/MS) Seats

A total of 271 new MD and MS seats have been sanctioned.
Government Colleges: The majority of the increase, 233 seats, will be added to government colleges.
Private Colleges: 38 seats will be offered at Narayan Medical College in Kanpur, a private institution.
New Total: This expansion brings the total PG seats in the state to 2,137 in government colleges and 2,160 in private colleges.
